Post-Doc and PhD position : Aesthetics of Protestantism in Northern Euope

The research group Mondes germaniques et nord-européens is seeking a doctoral and a post-doctoral fellow for the French-German project "Aesthetics of Protestantism in Scandinavia from the 19th to the 21st Century," funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft and the Agence National de la Recherche.

Within the project, a team of six will research the aesthetic significance of Protestantism for the literatures and cultures of Scandinavia from the Romantic period to the present. The duration of the project is 3 years.

 

The postdoctoral fellow is expected to work independently on a project related to the following topics.

a) Commitment and Transcendence in Scandinavian Modernist Poetry

or

b) Literary Occultism around 1900.

The applicant must have a PhD in a field of literary or cultural studies relevant to the project.

 

The Doctoral student is expected to write a dissertation on

a) Protestant film aesthetics (Bergman/Dreyer)
or
b) Nordic workers' literature in the early 20th century in the context of Protestant revivalist movements and a Protestant aesthetic.
A graduate degree in a literary or cultural subject relevant to the project is required.

 

For both positions, a very good active knowledge of Danish, Swedish, or Norwegian is required, as well as a good passive knowledge of the other two languages and a very good knowledge of English. Proficiency in French or German is an advantage.

The positions will be filled in consultation with the partner at the Albert Ludwigs University of Freiburg.

Employment is scheduled from May 2022 to April 2025.
